Clyde M. Johnston Unit is part of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Correctional Institutions Division. It provides a court-directed substance-use treatment setting. A person who completes a SAFP phase may move to aftercare and community supervision under the sentencing plan. Another person may transfer within TDCJ, return to another custody setting, enter parole supervision, or follow a different court order.

“No longer at Johnston” does not prove discharge. The unit field can change when TDCJ moves a person. A court-ordered treatment phase can also end while legal supervision continues. An identifier is safer than a common name. A current detail may show the assigned unit, offenses, and Projected Release Date. Later processing can add a Scheduled Release Date and Scheduled Release Location.

1. Search by TDCJ or SID number when available and confirm that the current location is Johnston Unit.
2. Read any Projected Release Date as an estimate, not proof that the person has left.
3. Check a later Scheduled Release Date and Location only as a plan that can still change.
4. When the name disappears, request TDCJ incarceration history and a release or discharge record.

Johnston Unit SAFP Custody

TDCJ identifies Johnston as a Substance Abuse Felony Punishment Facility with unit code JT. It is in Wood County, one mile east of Winnsboro on FM 3530. The official listing describes male custody and “Substance Abuse Offenders.” Programs include SAFP, In-Prison Substance Use Treatment, and Special Needs SAFP.

SAFP is a court-directed treatment setting within the state correctional system. It does not become a county jail because it is physically located in Wood County. The person’s judgment and program track determine what follows. Community-based aftercare may be part of the plan, yet another TDCJ placement or custody destination may also follow. Avoid calling every program completion a sentence discharge.

Johnston Unit TDCJ Release Records

TDCJ offers a free email information route that can include a TDCJ number, current location, offense of conviction, prior and current incarceration history, and Projected Release Date. Send a precise request to pia@tdcj.texas.gov with the full name and seven-digit TDCJ number. If the number is unknown, TDCJ describes exact date of birth, or approximate age with county of conviction, as alternate identifying information.

That free route expressly excludes photographs and Social Security numbers. For documentary proof, ask through the formal Public Information Act process for the incarceration history, actual release certificate, discharge date and type, and release location if public and maintained. TDCJ may redact confidential information, and some records may require an Attorney General ruling.

Johnston Unit Aftercare and Supervision

Probation, parole, and discharge are different outcomes. Probation, also called community supervision in Texas, is imposed by a court and administered through a local CSCD. Parole is release from prison before sentence discharge under TDCJ Parole Division supervision following a Board decision. Discharge means the custodial sentence has reached its legal endpoint, subject to other holds or cases.

If Johnston placement arose from probation, use the sentencing court and the responsible CSCD. Wood County CSCD handles local adult probation at 211A W. When parole applies, a favorable Board vote still does not prove physical release. TDCJ must process the certificate, audit the calculation, and establish the scheduled date and location. Wood County is assigned to the Tyler District Parole Office, but the actual office may depend on the person’s release plan. Confirm the release and responsible office rather than assuming the county assignment controls every case.

Johnston Unit Status Channels

TDCJ telephone routes depend on the stage of the case. Without a TDCJ or SID number, exact date of birth is required. Before a Board vote, parole-review status routes to 844-512-0461. After a vote to release, Parole Division release status routes to 512-406-5202 and requires a TDCJ or SID number or date of birth.

These numbers are not interchangeable. The unit contact answers facility questions. The public search reports current TDCJ custody. The records office provides historical documentation. Board status describes review and vote stages. Parole Division status addresses release processing after a favorable vote. Selecting the channel that matches the stage prevents a unit transfer from being mistaken for release.

Note: A Board vote, projected date, scheduled date, and actual Johnston Unit departure are separate events that may occur on different dates.

Johnston and Wood County Releases

Johnston Unit and Wood County Jail serve different systems. The county jail holds local detainees and county-sentence inmates under the Sheriff. Johnston is a TDCJ treatment facility for state correctional placements. A Wood County jail bond or book-out record cannot prove that someone left Johnston. Likewise, a TDCJ location change does not establish a county-jail release.

Someone may have records in both systems at different times. A county booking can lead to a felony judgment and later state placement. Keep the sheriff booking number, criminal case number, SID number, and TDCJ number distinct. If the inquiry concerns the local jail rather than Johnston, use the Wood County Jail release-record page.
